Kirtads is also called as Kerala institute of research and development of scheduled tribes and caste. It has a museum and a study centre for tribal people. It is located at Chevayur which is within 7 km away from the city. It was established in the year 1973 to gather things and cultural items used by the tribal people and to develop their life style. This museum holds the device and the tools used by the old tribal group belong to Kerala. It also displays things like domestic utensils, musical instruments, tribal huts, costumes, miniature models, ornaments, carrying and storing baskets bows and arrow etc. It has a library which is donated to the tribal literature with books about sociology and anthropology. It also has an exhibition hall, workshop for craft persons and a circular shaped open air stage with a balcony.
