Vallamkali Boat Race
The race of Vallamkali is a traditional boat race in Kerala. In this racing they use paddled war canoes. This race is conducted during the season of the harvest festival Onam in autumn. Vallamkali is also known as Snake Boat Race and is a major tourist attraction.
Nehru Trophy Boat Race
It is a popular race held in the Punnamada Lake near Alappuzha. The most popular event of the race is the competition of ChundanVallams (snake boats). Hence the race is also known as Snake Boat Race in English. The race conducted on the second Saturday of August every year is a major tourist attraction.
This boat race is organized in memory of the late Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi. It is held, two weeks after the Nehru Trophy Boat Race. It is held at Pulinkunnu, 10 km away from Alappuzha town. Demonstrations of ornamented boats and water floats are held, besides the boat races.
Kumarakom Boat Race
This race is also known as Sree Narayana Jayanthi Boat Race. It is held in the month of September every year during Onam feastival. More than 1000 oarsmen in boats of different sizes and shapes participate in this event.The winner in the race is awarded the Sree Narayana Ever Rolling Trophy.
Thazhathangadi Boat Race
This race is held during Onam, the harvest festival of Kerala, which falls either in August or September. It is a week-long event. The festival is made beautiful with water carnivals and various other boat races.
It is held on the river Pamba.The boat race is held on Thiruvonam day. Many different types of boats traditionally participate in this race. The boat race starts after the traditional onasadhya. It is celebrated at various other locations. The race is filled with excitement and enjoyable to watch.
